01. Magically Command - Marilyn was a pretty woman. Sitting opposite her, you could easily see that. Maybe she was even prettier in a way with her cheeks moist with tears.
With closed eyes she slowly shook her head. "Why is it," she asked, "Why is it I get into trouble?"
We sat there for a few moments without saying anything. She finally touched her handkerchief to her eyes and breathed softly, "That silence was worth far more than words. You seem to understand. Thank you."
02. Start Right Now - During the Third Crusade of the Middle Ages, the English knights under Richard the Lion-Hearted ran into a problem. The problem was built of stone. It was a massive, strongly fortified castle held by the fierce and fanatical Turks. The Crusaders knew that the castle had to be captured if the crusade was to push on to its final objective in the Holy Land.
03. Commanding Power - In high school we used to have a teacher who customarily greeted a new class by printing the following on the blackboard:
She would then ask us to pronounce the well-known word spelled by those letters. After letting the mystery build up for a moment she solved it by removing the hyphens. On second look the letters come out:
04. Make People Agree - I want to tell you of a discovery that excited the entire world some years ago. It happened near the village of Cardiff, in the state of New York. This adventure tale will more than entertain you. It will keep you in remembrance of how to make people agree with what you want.
05. Be Quickly Liked - A somewhat confused man once asked me, "Why should I care whether or not anyone likes me? I have enough money to live comfortably; I manage to keep myself busy; why should I bother whether anyone likes me?"
"Because," I told him, happiness is always better than misery. Of course you may have your money and your activities, but are you happy? Anyone can keep busy, but are you happy?"
06. Opposite Sex - Recently at a social affair, seven or eight of us were off to one side of the main party discussing life in general. The topic of conversation eventually drifted around to male-female relationships. When one of the women discovered that I wrote books on the topic of human relations, she addressed herself to me somewhat cynically:
"You know, now that I think about it, I don't think I like men very much."
07. Confidence + Energy - The story is told about Julius Caesar who was commanding an expedition of foreign conquest through a mountainous region:
As they reached the top level of a long mountain they saw below them a broad valley. Across the valley was another long mountain. On top of it were the enemy troops, strongly settled in defense position. Caesar glanced at the sun which was descending rapidly into the western horizon. The offensive, the Roman general knew, had to be made before darkness set in. That meant that every man must be placed in attack position at once.
08. Difficult People - As we all know from experience, there are some difficult and unreasonable people in this world. But we should also know at once that the clever commander can really quite easily turn them into allies and friends and customers.
The first thing to do is to abandon any negative attitudes we may have toward problem-people. Always consider them as interesting challenges to your powers of persuasion, never as people to be disliked or avoided.
09. Promote Your Interests - There was the wife who worriedly told her husband, "William, I'm worried about our little Tommy."
Asked Dad, "Why? What's he done?"
"Instead of doing his yard work he gets someone else to do it for him. I'm afraid he has no ability to work things out for himself."
"Ability?" Dad delightedly exclaimed. "Why, that boy has executive ability."
10. Personal Powers - Have you ever noticed the tremendous attraction that power has for all of us? Power of all kinds hypnotizes our attention and excites our emotions: The giant space rocket sends a thrill through us as it zooms powerfully skyward. Crashing thunder and leaping lightning hold us in a strange sort of fascination. Notice how the grand mightiness of music causes us to hold our breath, as when hearing the throbbing rhythm of The Battle Hymn of the Republic.
11. Powerfully Persuasive - A man doesn't fail in life because he has certain weaknesses; he fails because he doesn't possess certain strengths.
One of those major strengths which guarantee a man's fortunes is a persuasive personality. That is the magical magnet that effortlessly draws to a man his social success and his financial prosperity and everything else he desires from life. As a typical illustration, a recent newspaper story told of a salesman who called for the first time upon the chief executive of a large department store. So impressed was the executive by the salesman's attractive personality that he not only placed a large order for the salesman's products but offered his visitor a topnotch position with the store.
12. Financial Gain - A number of years ago a very wealthy man told me, "It is just as easy to make 1,000 dollars as it is to make 10 dollars." At that time I didn't believe him. I still don't. I believe it is often much easier to earn $1,000 than $10.
That is, when you use your magic power to persuade and command people.
The purpose of this chapter is to show you how you can turn your power over people into additional income and toward career advancement.s
13. Answers - You might as well win personal power the easy way. The following questions and answers will save effort and energy as you go about your people-persuading plans. Over the years I have found them to be among the most-often-asked. Apply the answers to your own programs.
At A Los Angeles Lecture I Heard You Speak On The Influential Power Of Self-Awareness.
14. Expand Influence - A highly successful man once told me, "Whenever the experts used to tell me that I could achieve ten times as much as I thought I could, I used to think that they said it just to make me feel good. Now I know the real reason they said it—because it's absolutely true. I know. I've proved it in both my business affairs and in my social life."
15. Miracle-Making - The story is told of a king of ancient India who summoned to his castle all the wise men of his kingdom.
He told them, "To the one who performs the miracle I request shall be given whatsoever his heart desires."
"What miracle, O King," asked the wise men, "do you require?"
16. Special Secrets - This chapter is your secret treasure chest!
We have been adventuring together in this book toward a single goal: The winning of your magic power to persuade and command people.
You now have knowledge of the techniques and procedures which make you skillful with people.
