My Secret Guidances for Winning Social Success

You want to get definite results from this book. That is why you are using it. This section places your continued efforts on a businesslike basis by guiding you toward practical results.

This section is called your secret guidances for the simple reason that you are entitled to have your own private goals and ambitions. You may, of course, wish to let others know of some of your plans, especially if this book is being used as a textbook for a group program. However, even then, every participant should have his own book and should keep at least part of his plans as his own personal secret. This has a way of increasing your individual forcefulness.

Here is how to use the following guidances:

The first step is to write down exactly what you want from your social relations. Do this in just a few words, such as, "I want more self-confidence in dealing with business clients," or, "I'd like to be more at ease with people." For additional suggestions, refer to the list of 40 goals found in Chapter 1.

Next, list three procedures found in this book which you will use for advancing toward your selected target. For instance, the technique of Reverse Reaction (in Chapter 10) will always add more harmony to your interpersonal relations. If your goal is to understand human nature better, you could recall the story of the Cardiff Giant (in Chapter 4) and write something like this: "Remember that people believe what they want and need to believe." Add the page number where your secret system is located. You now have three workable techniques which you can employ as often as possible.

As a third step, list your first resulting successes from using your techniques. After a reasonable time period of employment, write down what happened. You may have succeeded overwhelmingly, or perhaps you at least achieved a good start. Example: "I persuaded him to be a somewhat more considerate person."

Fourth, use the Comment lines to write down anything helpful that occurs to you. For instance, you might remind yourself to use your three techniques for a two-week period, then replace them with three new ones. Or perhaps you might make a note of your determination to influence a certain person toward your way of thinking. One man of my acquaintance fires up his enthusiasm with notes like, "Things are really happening!" and, "Stick to it!"
